Autumn Uniform

Before fall totally sweeps through DC in a couple weeks, my go-to uniform has been pretty simple: a button down and white skinnies. It’s easy, chic, and I can go from work to happy hour like it ain’t no thang. One shirt that has been on major repeat as we start transitioning into cooler temps is this little striped number. I love how classic it is, yet the black buttons give it just the right amount of edge. See how I styled it (and how I plan on styling it for months to come) below!

I’ve been on the hunt for a striped shirt like this for almost a year now, but every single one I found had one little thing wrong with it. Either the color was off, the price wasn’t right, or it looked just a bit too much like old-timey pajamas (anyone feel me on that?). This one checks all the boxes – oh, and did I mention it’s only $12.99?!?

Since you all know I’m all about white pants well into autumn, I decided to pair this shirt with my favorite distressed white skinnies. I love deep blues with rich cognac, so I topped off the look with my everyday Madewell tote, casual wedges, and my new favorite Daniel Wellington watch. To accessorize, I went simple with some minimal gold jewelry and edgy with round sunnies.

As chilly weather really rolls in, I’ll be layering this wardrobe staple under an olive utility jacket, letting the collar and cuffs peek out from a chunky sweater, and wrapping a plaid blanket scarf on top for a little pattern mixing. Probably not all at the same time, but I do tend to layer aggressively during fall and winter, so anything is possible, really.

Fresh Start

Every year, my New Year’s resolutions are pretty much the same. Exercise more, cook more, read more… But year after year, my resolutions last maybe a month or two before I go back to my naughty little ways. Instead of pretending that I’m going to be a better person with one of these cliche resolutions, I’ve decided to make a little lifestyle change with something simple, achievable, and still just as important as all my (failed) previous ones. In 2016, I am going to practice mindfulness and meditation. Learn what the heck I’m talking about (and get details on this fresh minimalist look) below!

You know when you drive somewhere and you don’t even remember doing it? Or eat dinner in front of the TV like a zombie? If you have any kind of routine or ritual, it’s really easy to feel like your days are a blur. Sometimes I feel like I’m kind of going through life in a haze, trying to bang out my to-do list and multitasking more than is probably healthy. Then all of a sudden my day is over and I don’t even know where it went. This is where mindfulness comes in. Whether it’s focusing on a meal I’m eating or enjoying the view on my drive to work, it can help with concentration, calmness, and even stress and anxiety reduction. With the use of meditation, mindfulness can slowly train your brain – and word on the street is that it’s not that hard. There are even helpful apps to walk you through it, which is great considering I have no idea what I’m doing!

I’m always hearing about all the incredible benefits of mindfulness and meditation, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this year’s resolution goes. If you have experience with this or are looking into trying it out yourself, I’d love to hear from you! Comment on this post or send me an email at

If you just came for the outfit deets, here they are. These OTK boots are incredible dupes for the Stuart Weitzman ones we see all over the place, but they are well below $100! Since they are so high and my legs are so short, I have to go for super short hemlines, so I went with this dress (that I think might actually just be a sweater) from StyleDwell. I accessorized with a classic Taxidermy crossbody, oversized tortoiseshell sunnies, my trusty Daniel Wellington, a few dainty gold jewels, and a red lip.

Holiday Gift Guide

It’s that time again! If you need help finishing your Christmas shopping (or starting if you’re irresponsible/me), I’ve got you covered. Below you’ll find gift guides for both her and him, featuring a little bit of everything to cover all the folks on your nice list. You know I’m always down for some cheapies, but I made the price point all across the board here since you’ll probably be spending more on your boo than your office secret santa. Take a peek at my picks!

  • J. Crew Pom-Pom Beanie – Keep your BFF cozy and chic in a faux fur pom hat. This neon pink one is sold out (but like belonged in my gift guide, sorrz), however there are similar/cheaper ones here and here.
  • Charleston Rice Bead Earrings – A Candy Shop Vintage creation made the list again, and I’m not mad about it. I didn’t want to include the studs last year since that’s what I was getting my sisters, but they are my absolute favorite!
  • Hanky Panky Thong – You won’t go wrong with one of these guys. The ladies in your life can never have enough, and if they’re anything like me, they rarely feel like shelling out $20+ to purchase a pair for themselves.
  • Cravings by Chrissy Teigen – *ALERT* this would be pre-order only (since it won’t be released until February), but you could wrap up the gift receiver’s favorite “craving” instead. Look how clever you are!
  • The Burlap Bag Candle – With scents like “Baked Bread,” “Cuddles,” and “La-La Land,” these creative candles are great if you need a silly stocking stuffer. They are also made with soy wax so you won’t be gifting toxic chemicals! Hooray!
  • GiGi New York Mini Zip Card Case – I don’t know about y’all, but I always think it’s a classy move when I ask for a business card and someone whips out a fancy little holder like this. This is also something that most people don’t think to buy themselves, making it the perfect present!
  • Nasty Gal Girl Boss Desk Plate – For the hustler in your life. Perhaps not ideal for cubicles at large companies, but to each her own.
  • Lip Kit by Kylie – Sooo tbh this gift guide was supposed to go live on Monday, meaning you would have known about the restock and could have actually bought this, but you could always buy it on eBay or wrap up an IOU. Friends don’t let friends buy their own Kardashian products!
  • Chiara Ferragni iPhone Case – Gold, glitter, and a wink? What’s not to love?
  • Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette – I was shopping with my blogger babe Brittany of Southern Meets Chic the other day, and she always keeps me in the know about must-have products like this one. (Blake Shelton sold separately.)

Duster + Luster

Oh, this plaid duster. This comfy little number has been on may-jah repeat this fall for a few reasons: a) it’s basically like wearing a potato sack, b) it’s ideal for these warm October days, and c) it can be easily dressed up or down. For this look, I leaned towards the latter, pairing it with sleek black accessories, a merlot-hued hat, and fab jewelry (hence the luster to my duster). Can we talk about the BEST part of this chic potato sack? It’s only $25.

If you’re not into the whole mixing of higher end and lower end, I would just turn back now. This is a prime example of that; starring some cheapo brands like Target and Forever, and then some pricier pieces from Karen Walker, Daniel Wellington, and local fave Theodosia Jewelry. In my humble opinion, anyone with an AmEx and a copy of Vogue can dress like a top fashion blogger, but it’s the thoughtful combination of affordable and designer that impresses me. So when you’re drooling over the endless pics of Rockstuds and Celine bags on insta, just know that you, too, can achieve that look (as well as your neighbor, coworker, and homeless man down the street) with enough dolla dolla billz. However, when you can take a $3 thrift store find and pair it perfectly with $300 designer duds? That’s when you inspire me. *rant over*

Whoa sorry guys, I think I just blacked out. Who wrote that paragraph up there?? Moving on – can we talk about accessories for a min? THESE JEWELS THO. I don’t think “obsessed” even begins to cover it. Theodosia Jewelry is one of my absolute favorites in Charleston. It’s so unique, colorful, and the just the right amount of edgy. Since I’m really into pairing cobalt and cranberry for fall, this tassel necklace was a no-brainer with my hat. Then, partially to tie it all together and also because I just can’t get enough Theodosia, I layered one more necklace on top. Last but certainly not least, I finished it off with tiny black diamond skull studs and a snake ring that made me feel like a sexy witch. (Halloween, I see you.)

Smoldering eye makeup, nude lips, and dark nails ended this look with a bang. If I were going the other way with this duster and wanted to dress it down, I’d wear it unbuttoned with ripped skinnies, a tank or crop top, and round sunnies. Keep the hat and shoes but ditch a few accessories and glam makeup, and you’ve got yourself a chic but effortless shopping outfit.

Raise your hand if you like to mix and match expensive and affordable like I do! If so, comment your favorite ways to do this below. Thanks for reading ❤

Longline & Feelin’ Fine

When the weather is still pretty toasty but all you want is fall clothes, you have to play with light layers, rich colors, and luxe details. This look combined a little bit of all of that, making me feel October-appropriate but not uncomfortably hot. One of my favorite ways to achieve this balance is a longline vest – they are breezy, chic, classic, and add polish to pretty much any outfit. Not to mention they give me major “mom from The Parent Trap” vibes (ugh RIP); a look I’m constantly trying to covet. See how I styled this timeless piece below!

So now that we’ve got the “light layers” part covered in my early fall outfit recipe, let’s move on to the rich colors. I love how this black MINKPINK dress is scattered with leaves and flowers in pretty autumn hues – it’s the perfect transitional piece for fall (not to mention made for this vest). For another warm pop of color, I opted for berry lips and deep brownish-purple nails.

Last but not least, you guessed it, the luxe details. I’m always a fan of gold in these situations (shocker), so I did it up with lots of gold accessories. I love the subtle touch of gold on my envelope clutch, and these round cat-eye shades from Quay Australia offered just the right amount of shiny sass. My Daniel Wellington always offers a luxurious touch, as did these bangles and soft leather peep-toe booties from Dolce Vita. Since I felt like the neckline of the dress needed a little something, I went with this dainty starburst lariat necklace (not the candy, unforch) that was – wait for it – LESS THAN $5. Nope, I didn’t forget a zero, it’s really $4.90. And because I can never resist fingers full of rings, I put on a few midis and a stack of delicate Gorjana rings from Rocksbox that are currently on repeat. Don’t forget to use code chloexoxo for a free month of similar jewelz getting sent to your door ❤

Needless to say, I see a lot of longline vest days in my future. It just kind of makes me feel like Carmen Sandiego on vacation, which is always a good thing IMO. When chillier days arrive, longline vests also transition seamlessly when paired with your favorite fall staples, like distressed skinnies and a turtleneck.

What do y’all wear on these humid fall days? Comment below so I can steal your ideas, hehe.

Late for Class

Happy first day of fall, y’all! Call me basic, but this is my absolute favorite time of the year (other than Christmas, duh). The weather, the leaves, the clothes – oh, the clothes. Today I’m kicking off the best season evs with this layered look to celebrate the return of 75 degree days, ordering hot coffee instead of iced, and being basic at heart (and not at all sorry about it).

I picked up this skirt at Topshop during my NYC month (#takemeback) and have been waiting for the perfect time to wear it. Although it could be seen as a warm-weather piece, I had big fall outfit plans for this baby. Charleston doesn’t really get the autumn memo until about November, so I’m always trying to find skirts and dresses that will be seasonally appropriate until then. Pairing this skirt with some layers did the trick (doesn’t it always?), so I decided to go with my chambray shirt and metallic rose gold sweater on top. To add to the schoolgirl vibe I was getting, I topped off the outfit with sneakers, a plaid scarf, and my Daniel Wellington watch.

To accessorize this look, I decided to counteract the sweetness of the outfit with some edgy touches: plum lips, black nails, my leopard clutch, and these fab Karen Walker sunnies. I’ve been trying to decide which Karen Walkers I want for months, then finally my prayers were answered with a little thing called Ditto. If Rocksbox is the Netflix of jewelry, then Ditto is the sunglasses version. For $24 a month you get unlimited designer sunnies delivered to your door, and let me just say that it’s kind of the best thing ever. If you’re as indecisive with sunglasses as I am, you gotta try it – and if you’re on the fence, use promo code TOPKNOTS for your first month free!

Too Cool for School

Back to School

Back to school shopping has brought me an absurd amount of joy ever since I can remember. Despite the fact that I’ve been out of school for a couple years now, “back to school” clothes have and will always be a thing. Just because we’ve graduated college (*tear*) doesn’t mean we can’t get excited about pencil pouches, new backpacks, and a fresh pair of sneakers. I mean if you think about it, we’re kind of getting the best deal here – we get to buy pretty planners and fun keychains, but we don’t have to do homework. Ever again. So in your face, kids.

To celebrate the beginning of another school year, the unofficial beginning of fall, and festive shopping, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite back to school gear that will have you dying to sharpen a pencil. Can’t you just hear the lunch bell ringing?

  • Leopard Print Baseball Cap: Cover up your bed head while still looking effortlessly chic. Does it get any better than that? Oh yeah, the fact that it’s only $11.
  • Frends Headphones: Be the cool kid on the bus with these babies. I think I include these in pretty much every shopping guide I’ve ever posted, but can you blame me?
  • Warby Parker Glasses: Nerdy chic has never looked so good with these spectacles. Don’t have a prescription? Your secret is safe with me (and Warby Parker).
  • Fur Keychain: Fashionistas everywhere are rocking fun keychains on handbags, backpacks – you name it. Hang this merlot-hued fur keychain from your favorite bag for a playful fall twist.
  • Distressed Cognac Backpack: From the tassel zipper to that perfectly distressed (faux) leather, this backpack is everything.
  • White Marble Backpack: Look like every blogger’s insta backgrounds with this white marble backpack! Yes, I’m just bitter that I don’t have marble countertops.
  • Black Quilted Backpack: Chic, classic, and a little edgy, this backpack could even be work-appropriate.
  • Rifle Paper Co. Agenda: Everyone’s favorite floral print, now on a planner. Need I say more?
  • I Am Very Busy Agenda: Pencil in your events and appointments in style, you busy bee. Also comes in pink & rose gold! *insert heart eyes emoji here*
  • Striped Travel Mug: Is anyone else a serious sucker for these mantras? This travel mug is perfect for back to school and will remind you that you’re awesome. Even if you didn’t really do your best.
  • Polka Dot Travel Mug: For those of you who want a travel mug that doesn’t talk to you. You know I can’t resist those polka dots, Kate Spade!
  • Essie Fall 2015 Mini Four-Pack: Essie’s newest seasonal collection makes my basic little heart happy. Try out the top colors above, or check out the full collection here.
  • New Balance 620 Sneakers: As someone whose feet cry after an hour in heels, I’m a big fan of the sneaker craze right now. Bonus points if they’re in festive fall colors like this pair!
  • Daniel Wellington Watch: What would back to school shopping be without a shiny new timepiece? If you’re ready to graduate from your Michael Kors, pick up one of these – I promise you won’t regret it.
  • Stay Focused Pencil Pouch: More words of encouragement from, and very fitting when you have crippling ADD.
  • Assorted Pen Set: Because you need cute pens and pencils to put in your cute pencil pouch, duh.
  • Metallic Hair Ties: Ponytails don’t have to be limited to workouts. Channel your 4th grade self (and shave off a few minutes of your morning routine) with a pretty pony.

So can we all just agree to never stop back to school shopping? Even though I’m kind of always back to school shopping? I’m not going to apologize, because buying cute pens will never not be fun. Happy first day of school/work/unofficial fall, y’all!

Welcome to New York

Let me just start off by saying I’m not sorry for my cheesy blog post title – New York has been waiting for me. There isn’t much I don’t love about this city – the people, the food, the weather (I forgot what anything less than 100% humidity felt like), and of course, the fashion. I’ve been having so much fun stepping outside of my style comfort zone and taking a break from all the sweet, southern clothes in my closet. Don’t get me wrong – I love bright colors, floral prints and girlie silhouettes as much as the next gal – but sometimes muted hues and edgy pieces just speak to me. Enter: this little outfit.

Since I’ve been trying to avoid spending copious amounts of money during my month in the city (which is terrifyingly easy), I’ve been trying to focus on my cheap girl stores – Zara, Forever 21, the sale section at Topshop… you know how I do. I picked up this mock neck midi at Forever for less than $18 and decided that as much as I want to, I’ll never be able to raise my standards higher than good ole F21. You just can’t beat that, guys. This dress is chic, trendy, and SO comfortable – and when it goes out of style in a couple years, I won’t hate myself for spending too much money on it. Amirite?!

To add to the edge (and let’s be real, to cover up my NYC pizza-induced FUPA), I tied my jean jacket around my waist – 90s girl at heart. I finished off the look with a burgundy hat, round sunnies, gold jewelz, and Stan Smiths. I’ll be honest, it took me a little while to get on board with these retro Adidas due to the fact that I had them in 7th grade (see also: the return of jean skirts), but now that I have them, I don’t know how I ever didn’t have them. Speaking of saving money, I also bought the kids ones which saved me about $30. If you have creepily small feet like I do, alwayzzzz try kids sizes first. #insidertip

So here’s to cheap clothes that don’t look cheap, chillin in the kids department, and New York freaking City. Can I stay forever?

Born in the USA

We all know I’m a serious sucker for a matching set, so when I stumbled across this eyelet top + shorts, it was all over. I actually bought this set back in the spring, but I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted to style it, so it just hung in my closet. Finally I was ~inspired~ by the 4th of July and it all just flowed. Don’t ya just love when that happens?

I think when it came to styling this, my problem was trying to avoid looking too cutesy. I mean it is white, eyelet, scalloped, and has tiny buttons down the front for crying out loud. If I read that description to you, you’d probably think I was talking about an infant’s baptism dress. See my problem? I recently bought this jean jacket on sale(!) at Gap, and ever since then I’ve been wearing it nonstop. This outfit was no exception. I love how it looks slung over the shoulders to make this outfit a *little* more modest, but it also looks too cool 4 skool when tied around the waist. To add to the edgy, I went with lots of black accessories: a black envelope clutch, lace-up heels, round sunglasses, and my Daniel Wellington watch.

As always, I went a little overboard with my jewels. I’m talking major stack of bangles, fingers full of rings, and even a couple flash tattoos. Then, since I already had the white and blue, I added a pop of red with a precious pair of heart ear jackets and crimson lips.

Happy 4th of July, y’all! Don’t forget to check out yesterday’s post for a little Independence Day outfit inspo, as well as the master list of holiday weekend sales ❤

What To Wear On Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving can be one of the toughest holidays to dress for. Depending on your plans, you want to look cute but at the same time be super comfy, and anything even remotely restricting is completely out of the question. My problem is usually going for total comfort (and an elastic waistband, OBVI) but not looking 100% homeless. So whether you’re going to your guy’s house for the first time, having friendsgiving with your pals, or just hanging at home, I’ve got your outfit covered.

Meeting Your Man’s Fam

When you have to look presentable, but still want to be able to load up on the carbs, dresses are an obvious choice. I love this cowl-neck sweater dress — it’s so unbelievably cozy, lets your food baby breathe (while concealing it!), and looks totally put-together. I paired it with some Frye boots, a leopard print clutch, tortoiseshell studs, a classic watch, and some fally nails. Eat your heart out, future in-laws.

Sweater Dress | Cognac Boots | Leopard Clutch | Tortoiseshell Studs | Leather Watch | Nail Lacquer

Friendsgiving With Pals

If you’re having Friendsgiving, go for a fun and trendy look. Again, to let your food baby grow and prosper, opt for a dress, like this fun printed shift. Pair with a fur vest and black over-the-knee boots to really amp up the trendiness, then add on some wishbone studs (get it?!), a fun bracelet, and some red lipstick for a pop of color.

Shift Dress | Fur Vest | Over-The-Knee Boots |  Wishbone Studs | Pave Link Bracelet | Red Lipstick

Home For The Holidays

For those of us who stay home with our families for Thanksgiving, the common issue is usually “what do I wear that feels like PJs, but isn’t PJs?” Finding something that you can lounge around the house in while not looking like a hobo can be a grueling task. I picked out an oversized, off-the-shoulder sweater, some nice and stretchy Lululemon wunder unders, and my all time favorite footwear, LL Bean’s Wicked Good Moccasins. To top it off, throw on a plaid blanket scarf, cozy cable knit socks, a burgundy beanie, and fun little spoon & fork studs. And if you’re hungover from the biggest bar night of the year, you’ll need a bottomless cup of coffee.
